- HOW TO USE A MEMBRANE SYSTEM TO PREP A SHOWER FOR TILING - First, wipe the backerboard with a wet sponge. Mix mortar and spread it with a trowel. Press the waterproof membrane in and cut an X-shaped slit for the valve. Repeat for remaining walls. Do the same for corners. Set the shower pan, mark and cut the drain hole. Clean the subfloor, spread and rake mortar. Set the pan and repeat for corners and seams. Install the curb. Once the mortar cures, start tiling.
